无色透明液体，有煤油气味。主要为戊烷和己烷的混合物。不溶于水，溶于无水乙醇、苯、氯仿、油类等多数有机溶剂。易燃易爆，与氧化剂可强烈反应。主要用作溶剂和油脂处理。通常用铂重整抽余油或直馏汽油经分馏、加氢或其他方法制得。 一般有30～60℃、60～90℃、90～120℃等沸程规格。
