方向保持不变的电流称为直流电流，通称直流。即在单位时间内通过导体横截面的电量相等，则称之为稳恒电流或恒定电流，简称为直流(Direct Current)，记为DC或dc，直流电流要用大写字母I表示。 直流电流I与时间t的关系在I－t坐标系中为一条与时间轴平行的直线。
电流变化越快，电压也就越大，即使某时刻的电流为 0 ，也可能有电压；如果通过电感的电流为 直流电流 （ DC current ），那么电感上就没有电压，这时电感相当于短路，所以，电感具有通直流作用。
