犬小孢子菌是较常见的致病性真菌，由Gruby在1843年首次发现。常常是头癣、体癣和少数甲癣以及其他少见真菌病的病原菌。犬小孢子菌作为亲动物性真菌，在动物身上可以长期存在而不致病（尤其在猫、狗身上），而犬小孢子菌一旦感染人便造成皮肤或毛发的损害，危及人类健康。
犬小孢子菌(microsporum canis)亦称羊毛状小孢子菌(microsporum lanosum sabouraud)是引起儿童头癣的主要病原菌,一般2～10岁儿童发病较多,婴儿感染较少见.
