热扩散系数是物体中某一点的温度的扰动传递到另一点的速率的量度。以物体受热升温的情况为例来分析，在物体受热升温的非稳态导热过程中，进入物体的热量沿途不断地被吸收而使局部温度升高，在此过程持续到物体内部各点温度全部相同为止。热扩散系数比热导率有更直觉的反应，就是说，热导率高的材料并不一定使你感到物体这头热了，那头很快就热；而热扩散系数大的材料就能使你感到温度很快从这头传到了那头。
