活性污泥驯化是为使已培养成熟的粪便污水活性污泥逐步具有处理特定工业废水的能力的转化过程。驯化的方法可在进水中逐渐增加特定工业废水的比例，或提高工业废水的浓度，使微生物逐渐适应新的生活条件，逐步达到对特定废水所要求的满负荷及很高的处理效率为止。驯化过程中，能分解废水的微生物得到发展，不能适应的微生物被逐渐淘汰。驯化过程中应根据微生物需要加入养料。为了缩短培养驯化时间，可将培养、驯化两阶段合并起来进行。
