架空光缆是架挂在电杆上使用的光缆。架空光缆敷设方式可以利用原有的架空明线杆路，节省建设费用、缩短建设周期。架空光缆挂设在电杆上，要求能适应各种自然环境。一般用于长途二级或二级以下的线路，适用于专用网光缆线路或某些局部特殊地段。
