新城疫病毒在病毒分类学中的位置属于副黏病毒科、副黏病毒属中的一个种。该病毒主要危害鸡、珠鸡和火鸡，在被侵袭的鸡群中迅速传播，强毒株可使鸡群全群毁灭。弱毒株仅引起鸡群呼吸道感染和产蛋量下降，但可迅速康复。人类可因接触病禽和活毒疫苗而引起结膜炎或淋巴腺炎，但很快便康复。
