应力椭球（stress ellipsoid）是物体内一点的应力状态的几何形象。在三轴（三维、空间）应力状态中，受力物体内任意方向截面上的应力σ矢量端点，在以主应力方向为坐标轴方向的正交坐标系中的坐标值x、y、z,符合方程：x2σ21+y2σ22+z2σ23=1。应力椭球表明这些应力矢量端点的几何轨迹是半轴分别相当于主应力σ1、σ2和σ3的绝对值的一个椭球面，称为应力椭球。与三个主平面都不平行的任一截面上，除正应力外均存在有剪应力。平分最大与最小主应力轴夹角，并包含中间主应力轴的斜截面上的剪应力值，称为最大剪应力（maximum shear stress），其值为τmax=12（σ1-σ3）。
