该专业是国家加快城镇化建设进程中的人才紧缺专业。专业源于1983年，是广西唯一开办该专业的学校，培养的毕业生已成为广西城镇规划设计、城镇建设管理岗位的中坚力量。课程设置以就业为导向，主要课程授课由具有城镇规划编制、城镇建设管理和建筑设计实践经验的“双师型”教师担任。教学中突出实践教学，注重能力培养，强化专业绘图软件应用。学生毕业时具有较强的城乡规划设计、城镇建设管理和中小型民用建筑设计能力，工作适应性强。
