垂直发射系统英文名称vertical launching system（VLS）舰载导弹是舰艇防空、反舰和反潜的主要武器，垂直发射系统早期都是倾斜发射的。 倾斜发射方式的主要缺点，一是作战时，发射装置通常要转向目标来的方向，反应时间长；二是发射装置占用面积较大，大舰最多装2～3个，小型舰艇只有一个，每个发射装置上导弹数量，少的一枚，最多的8枚，发射完了之后，重新装弹更费时间，影响舰艇的火力；三是发射装置暴露在甲板上，作战中很容易被打坏。
如果该项目进展顺利，美国海军或将得到先进的、高速度、能在巡洋舰和驱逐舰上Mk 41 垂直发射系统 ( Vertical Launch System )上发射的飞弹。
