地应力测试是工程岩体稳定性分析及工程设计的重要参数，目前主要靠实测求得，特别是构造活动较强烈及地形起伏复杂的地区。 由于应力不能直接测得，只能通过测量应力变化引起的诸如位移、应变等物理量的变化值，然后基于某种假设反算出应力值。因此，目前国内外使用的所有应力测量方法，都是在平硐壁面或地表露头面上打钻孔或刻槽，引起应力扰动，然后用探头测量由应力扰动而产生的各种物理量变化值的方法来实现。
