回流污泥是由二次沉淀（或沉淀区）分离出来，回流到生物段的活性污泥。 回流污泥指曝气池混合液经二次沉淀池沉淀浓缩下来的污泥中回流至曝气池的那部分污泥。回流污泥的目的是使曝气池内保持一定的悬浮固体浓度，也就是保持一定的微生物浓度。
