长城站位于乔治岛的菲尔德斯半岛上，方位是南纬62度13分，西经58度57分40秒（谷歌地球）。它面临民防湾中的一条小湾，这条小湾已被中国南极考察队命名为长城湾。长城站背靠终年积雪的山坡，水源十分丰富。这里地势开阔，滩涂约长2000米，宽约300余米，是企鹅自然保护区、鸟类自然保护区、鲸鱼保护区、植物和化石保护区。这里，在夏季还能看到成片黄绿色的地衣和苔藓，是科学家进行考察的理想场所。
