A few hundred million years after the earth's fiery birth, inert chemicals began to duplicate into simple single-celled forms of life called bacteria. Sometimes errors crept into their copying systems, creating variety. One type used the sunlight to make food, giving off oxygen as waste. Over the next 2.5 billion years these simple life forms filled the air with surplus supplies of this vital energy-rich gas, giving birth to a new atmosphere. Teamwork between the earth, its environment and early bacteria improved conditions for more complex forms of life. Bacteria merged to create more complex cells which themselves began to link together into the first multi-cellular beings.
