Pope John XXIII, for example, was elected in 1958 at the age of 77 to be a "bridge pope," a placeholder of sorts until the College of Cardinals could better figure out where it wanted the church to go, and who should lead it there.
On a more serious note, Federico Sturzenegger, president of the Banco Ciudad bank in Buenos Aires, said the new pope could help bridge gaps between Argentines.
