abstract:Ignatius of Loyola (, ) (ca. October 27, 1491 – July 31, 1556) was a Spanish knight from a local Basque noble family, hermit, priest since 1537, and theologian, who founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and, on 19 April 1541, became its first Superior General.
So we have the first pope to be elected from the Society of Jesus, known as the Jesuits, who were founded by IgnatiusofLoyola in the 16th century while Catholicism reeled from Protestant challenges.
The late cardinal of Florence and right-hand man of Pope Paul VI, Giovanni Benelli who crossed swords with Escriva over the years nevertheless once said that what Saint IgnatiusofLoyola, the founder of the Jesuits, was to the sixteenth-century Council of Trent, Escriva was to the Second Vatican Council.
