谓语是对主语动作状态或特征的陈述或说明，指出"做什么(what to do)" , "是什么(what is this)" 谓语动词的位置一般在主语之后，经常用动词和形容词搭配然后用来充当谓语动词。在英语中，动词按作用和功能主要分为两大类，一类是谓语动词，另一类是非谓语动词。
长期以来,许多传统语法学家都倾向把一个句子分为两个部分:主(subject)语和谓语(predicate)。主语部分表示句子陈述的对象(Whatistalkedabout) ,即人们所说的主题,谓语部分则用来说明主语怎么样或干什么。
