生殖毒性研究的实验目的是为了揭示一种或多种活性物质对哺乳动物生殖功能的任何影响, 是药物非临床安全性评价的重要内容。在药物开发的过程中, 生殖毒性研究的目的是通过动物试验考察受试物对哺乳动物生殖功能和发育过程的影响, 预测其可能产生的对生殖细胞、受孕、妊娠、分娩、哺乳等亲代生殖机能的不良影响, 以及对子代胚胎–胎儿发育、出生后发育的不良影响。
毒性分类与筛选标准方面,化学物质定义为具有致癌性(Carcinogenic), 致突变性 ( Mutagenic )和生殖毒性(Toxic to Reproduction),缩写为C/M/R或简称CMR物质.
