氯苯为无色液体，沸点132.2℃。第一次世界大战期间主要用于生产军用炸药所需的苦味酸。1940年到1960年间，大量用于生产滴滴涕(DDT)杀虫剂。1960年后，DDT逐渐被高效低残毒的其他农药所取代，氯苯的需求量日趋下降。主要用做乙基纤维素和许多树脂的溶剂，生产多种其他苯系中间体，如硝基氯苯等。
