官名。始置于战国，为县令之佐官。秦汉相沿。典文书及仓狱，为县令，县长之辅佐，历代所置略同。惟晋及南朝宋无（宋只设建康狱丞）。丞之官秩，汉为二百石至四百石，明清县丞为正八品官。明代规定凡方圆不及20里者不设县丞，故多数县份都有佐贰官。清代县丞多不设，在全国1300多个县份中，仅设县丞345人。
