原始宗教是原始社会发展到一定阶段产生的以反映人和自然矛盾为主要内容的初期状态的宗教。原始宗教在学术界一般被理解为近存原始社会的宗教，其研究即根据对近存原始民族之宗教崇拜的考察分析。 而通过考古发掘所证实的、在成文历史出现之前就已存在的远古原始宗教则被称为史前宗教。但二者实质相同，其基本特点都包括对食物、繁殖、祖先、死亡、自然万物、以及社会群体的神秘观念和祈求敬拜，并由此发展出对超自然体之神灵的信仰及崇拜。
