风化作用（weathering）是指地球和宇宙间、地壳表层与大气圈、水圈和生物圈之间物质与能量转化的表现形式。风化作用是在大气条件下，岩石的物理性状和化学成分发生变化的作用。作用的营力有太阳辐射、水、气体和生物。按岩石风化的性质分物理风化和化学风化两种基本类型。在岩石风化过程中，这两类风化通常是同时进行，而且往往是互相影响、又互相促进的。
