靖州苗族侗族自治县位于湖南省西南，怀化市南部，湘黔桂交界地区。地处云贵高原东部斜坡边缘，雪峰山脉西南端，沅水上游之渠江流域。属亚热带季风性湿润气候，境内林果、药材资源丰富，矿产资源品位较高。交通四通八达，209国道、枝柳铁路纵贯全境。2000年，靖州工业总产值18.4亿元，财政收入6413万元，农民人均收入2163元。
靖州平茶金矿为多硫化物型锑金矿床，矿化受近东西向次级断裂和蚀变带控制，矿床规模小，但品位高。
