指两个相同的汉字重叠在一起。重言通常是一个词。从字上来说，也称为“叠字”。古人称一字为一言。如《史记·老庄申韩列传》说老子著书五千言，五千言就是五千字。重言的名称见于明代方以智《通雅·释诂》,后来一直沿用。清代王筠有《毛诗重言》一书,专讲《诗经》中的重言。 在《诗经》里，两字重叠为一个词的很多，或摹仿物的声音，或形容事物的形貌状态。如“关关”状鸟鸣，“呦呦”状鹿鸣，“喓喓”状虫鸣,“丁丁”状伐木声；“依依”形容杨柳枝叶摇曳，“楚楚”形容衣服鲜明闪光，“蹲蹲”形容舞蹈之状，“迟迟”形容行路舒缓之状都是。物的发声和物的动作姿态经常是持续重复的,所以在语言里就采用重言来表示，这是汉语所有的特殊的东西。发展起来，也就成为一种修辞上加重意思的手段。如“洋洋得意”、“姗姗来迟”、“夸夸其谈”、“岌岌可危”、“茫茫一片”、“惶惶不安”等等。
