又称自动操舵装置，是船舶上用于自动控制舵机，以保持船舶按规定航向航行的设备。船舶水面航行主要是依靠舵来控制航向，自动操舵仪指代替舵手操舵，保证船舶自动跟踪指令航向，达到自动保持与改变航向的目的。 结合陀螺罗经或磁罗经使船能自动保持预定航向的装置。在船正航时，通连罗经刻度盘的接触器处于绝缘位置，对舵不起作用。船偏航时，接触器接通电流开动操舵电动机以绑正偏航直至船回复并按预定航向前进。因其对偏航反应灵敏，可使船沿较直航线前进。可全自动操舵或与人工操舵共同运用，也可将其关闭全用人工操舵。
