粮食作物是对谷类作物（小麦，水稻，玉米）、薯类作物 (包括甘薯、马铃薯等) 及豆类作物 (包括大豆、蚕豆、豌豆、绿豆等) 的总称。在营养上，谷类作物主要提供淀粉、植物蛋白、维生素等，豆类作物主要提供蛋白质、脂肪等，薯类作物主要提供淀粉、维生素等。这类作物同时也是牲畜的精饲料，需用量极大，栽培面积和比重也较大。
