1884年国际天文工作者在美国首都华盛顿(Washington)召开国际经度会议，决定以经过格林尼治天文台的经线为本初子午线，以此计算地理上的经度；以格林尼治为“世界时区”的起点；以天文台的计时仪来校准时间。从此，格林尼治闻名于世。格林威治（有译：格林尼治）位于伦敦东南、泰晤士河南岸。格林威治，为地球经线的起始点。而这条本初子午线，除了是格林威治标准时间制定的依据，同时也将地球划分成东西两半。
