小汤山是京北重镇，素有“温泉古镇”之美称，西北距昌平卫星城东南10公里，南距亚运村17公里，东距首都机场16公里，总面积70.1平方公里，小汤山具有地热资源丰富的自然优势。 因此处山丘较小，仅有海拔50.1米高，且山麓有温泉，古人称热水为“汤”，故名小汤山。
