传输模式是光学纤维最基本的传输特性之一。若一种光纤只允许传输一个模式的光波，则称它为单模光纤。如果一种光纤允许同时传输多个模式的光波，这种光纤为多模光纤。光学上把具有一定频率，一定的偏振状态和传播方向的光波叫做光波的一种模式，或称光的一种波型。
