高功，道教法师的专名。在举行宗教仪式时高座居中，在道士中是被认为道功最高，故称高功。高功之称的由来：高功是道教行仪时的执事名称，同都讲、监斋等合称为“三法师”，共同主持斋醮仪礼的进行。高功是经堂执事首领，清静身心，阐扬教法，随坛作仪。主持大小法事，上表迎驾一切朝事，经典玄律，科范威仪，虔洁规模等类，不得轻浮狂燥，对越金容当严肃恭虔，违者罚。“高功”之称，古已有之，原是指学问渊博、功力深厚的人。
