广东人。广东三合会成员、1854年参加红巾军，进攻广东韶州(今韶关)。1855年夏，往湖南、江西，加入太平军。1857年冬随石达开远征，自江西转战广西．为右队精忠先锋。1860年1月，与谭星等东走，转战湘赣。1861年4月投入侍王李世贤麾下。1862年，封天将。1864年，随李世贤就食江西。后投奔汪海洋。1865年8月，在广东镇平[今蕉岭)为清军内应，降清。
