Gueldner is optimistic that kids can learn both to manage their emotions and to be kinder to others.

Young children, usually 4- to 8-year-olds, learn to recognize physiological cues, such as “when you feel afraid, your heart beats faster and you might feel uncomfortable,” says Gueldner.
