Knittel and his colleagues acknowledge there are other ways to measure these businesses, but conclude that most competing definitions tell roughly the same story they do.
The graph below, from Christopher Knittel, shows that we have the lowest gas taxes in the OECD by a long shot, and, perhaps unsurprisingly, have the highest per capita usage as well.
