蔡天文，1967年出生于浙江省瑞安市莘塍镇。著名家庭教育专家蔡笑晚的长子。1986年毕业于杭州大学（现浙江大学）数学系，1990年在上海交通大学获应用数学硕士学位，1990年9月获全额奖学金赴美国留学。2000年，获得美国国家科学研究基金，不久就被聘为美国宾州大学的终身教授兼博士生导师，成为宾州大学历史上最年轻的终身教授之一。2006年当选国际数理统计学会会士（Fellow, Institute of Mathematical Statistics）。2008年度世界统计学“考普斯”奖(COPSS: The Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies) 获得者。任专业领域中权威刊物《The Annals of statistics》的主编，及《Journal of American Statistical Association》、《Statistia sinica》、《Statistics Surveys》的副主编。
