A third regimen, which Dr. Mattson follows, is known as time-restricted feeding.

In 2011, Dr. Mattson and his colleagues reported a study of the 5:2 program that followed 107 overweight and obese women.

"From an evolutionary perspective, it's pretty clear that our ancestors did not eat three meals a day plus snacks," Dr. Mattson said.

Mattson thinks partial fasting has numerous benefits, from improving glucose regulation, which can protect against diabetes, to also lowering blood pressure.

"Describe the errors in terms of the department or the team, and ask whether there's anything you can do to help prevent any more mistakes, " Mattson says.

Ask everyone you meet how you can help them. It's easy to overlook the fact that you might have contacts and information that could be useful to someone else, notes Mattson.

"Take an hour or so each day and do something you enjoy that energizes you, whether it's working out, gardening, listening to music, or whatever makes you happy," Mattson advises.
