And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD and said, "If you will give the Ammonites into my hand".

And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father's house?
耶弗他回答基列的长老说，从前你们不是恨我，赶逐我出离父家吗。
And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then died Jephthah the Gileadite, and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead.
耶弗他作以色列的士师六年。基列人耶弗他死了，葬在基列的一座城里。
And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands.

And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.

Then Jephthah went over to fight the Ammonites, and the LORD gave them into his hands.

Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites.

So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob, where a group of adventurers gathered around him and followed him.

Jephthah answered, "I and my people were engaged in a great struggle with the Ammonites, and although I called, you didn't save me out of their hands."

Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.

And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

Then Jephthah the Gileadite died, and was buried in a town in Gilead.

So Jephthah crossed over to the Ammonites to fight against them, and the LORD gave them into his hand.

And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of tob.

Jephthah then called together the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim.

We know only a little about Jephthah, but he does demonstrate that living by faith makes it possible to get beyond the hurts and sufferings of the past.
