"It was a little better than expected, " said David Wyss, chief economist at Standard and Poor's.

"Over a longer periods these things do track, but month-to-month there's a lot of noise, " Wyss said.
"Big ticket items are suffering because people are becoming much more reluctant to take on debt, " Wyss said.
"Earlier this year, manufacturing was held up by a weak dollar, but that dynamic has changed, " Wyss noted.
"This covers Thanksgiving week, so it has to be taken with a large grain of salt, " Wyss said.
"There's also somewhat different set of securities that can be submitted, " Wyss noted.
As a result, Wyss may end up as the richest man in Switzerland.
"The problem would be worse if oil prices continue to soar, " Wyss warned.
Along with fellow Swiss billionaire, Ernesto Bertarelli, he is planning to launch Wyss Institute in the former Merck Serno offices in Geneva.
Mr. WYSS: With the rising foreclosures and delinquencies in the subprime market, they got reminded that risk is still a four-letter word.
Wyss expects the sour numbers to continue for the next few months.
Wyss accomplished this feat of mind-changing through a variety of methods.
In short, Stevenson realized that education was important to Wyss.
"The good news is there was a bit of an uptick in consumer sentiment, but frankly I think it's going to be a pretty lousy fourth quarter, " Wyss said.
So Stevenson developed a proposal with Wyss that demonstrated the financial need of HBS doctoral students and the power of their research and teaching to make the world a better place.
The stored data "is sequential, like a magnetic tape, where you have to spool through stuff to get at the data, " said bioengineer Sriram Kosuri at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard, who was the project's lead researcher.
Wyss, a committed conservationist, is Chairman of The Wyss Foundation and The HJW Foundation, charitable organizations that work on environmental issues, as well as social issues in immigration reform, healthcare for all Americans, fairness in the loan industry and in women's health and reproductive rights, among many other projects.
"We thought deliveries would go up before the end of the year in order to be eligible for the tax break--but that's just not doing it, and that may be because profits are so bad that companies can't get an additional tax break, since there's nothing to write off against, " Wyss said, adding that the inability to attain financing is also a factor.
