Commenting on the closure of the call centre in Newport, which employs 90 staff, South Wales assembly member Mike German said he was "dismayed" at the announcement, saying it was a "complete turnabout" nine months after an announcement to create 150 new jobs there.
He said: "We have to rethink and redesign what our city centres are all about - and the city centre of Newport has taken a brave step in saying that maybe it's not just about retail, that it's not just about office space - it's about this kind of mixed activity, so dwelling spaces as well as commercial spaces".
He told the newspaper that any plan for Newport's city centre should be based on how it must look in the 21st Century - with "a greater mix of businesses, accepting there are some shop units that aren't going to be shops in the future".

The medieval ship was discovered on the construction site of the theatre and arts centre in Newport in July.
University leaders have been working on the plans with Newport Council and Newport Unlimited - the body responsible for work to make the city centre more attractive to businesses, residents and visitors.
But in March it was announced that plans to revamp Newport's shopping centre with the Friars Walk development for John Frost Square had been approved.
These come on top of the existing regeneration work in Newport, including a new waterfront development alongside the River Usk that flows beside the city centre.
