The registry was founded in the late 1950s, when two Swedish researchers, with funding from the country's tobacco industry, wanted to study the then-inconclusive evidence that smoking was bad for health.
He points out that when there were not enough jobs to go round for white Swedish building workers, the government offered tax relief on home refurbishment, causing a boom in the industry.
