In developing the thematic area, UNESCO is a leader in the areas of: transboundary surface and groundwater, waterquality, integrated water resource management and climate change adaptation and water.
The degradation of waterquality in surface and groundwater systems is further exacerbating water scarcity and negatively impacting our natural environment and the ecosystem services and goods that it provides, jeopardizing food security and livelihoods.
