The problem at HCA results from a combination of mis-diagnosis (treating people for coronary artery disease who did not have the disease) and self-referral (the provider who makes the false diagnosis then performs the treatment and profits by it).
However, similar symptoms may also occur if there's an injury, swelling or infection of various parts of the male anatomy, so it is important that a physician make the diagnosis if something abnormal is found on a self-exam.
