The Director-General held an hour-long discussion with the UN Country Team, headed by Resident Coordinator Dr Jacqui Badcock.
The Resident Coordinator made a presentation on the current situation in Cuba and the overall cooperation and role of the UN.
Mr. Timo Pakkala, UN Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, affirmed that girls' education is a must in order to meet development targets in Pakistan.
Referring to the UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) 2008-2012 for Cuba, the UN Resident Coordinator said that it has been extended until 2013 in agreement with the Cuban Government.
Making reference to the presence of the UN in Cuba for many years, the UN Resident Coordinator underlined the importance of the work of the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in the country.

In his opening remarks, the UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Timo Pakkala , applauded the ongoing efforts of the government of Pakistan particularly with the promulgation of series of legislation intending to protect women and girls from violence.
The Office has approximately 70 staff and is led by an Executive Representative of the Secretary-General, Michael von der Schulenburg, who also serves as United Nations Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative in Sierra Leone.
The UN Resident Coordinator, Patrice Coeur-Bizot, emphasized that communication for development has acquired new significance and meaning during the preparations of the current United Nations Development Framework in which the UN India Country Team has been closely engaged.

Helen Clark, who will have meetings in Ankara, Istanbul, and Kars during her visit, will be accompanied by the Director of the Regional Bureau of UNDP for Europe and Commonwealth of Independent States, Ms. Kori Udovicki, and UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Turkey, Mr. Shahid Najam.
