Skype CEO Tony Bates this morning said the company has agreed to acquire Qik, a mobile video services company.
Qik, based in Redwood City, California, has about 60 employees.
The application, from video and voice conferencing provider Polycom, is being billed as the next stage in mobile video communications, a step beyond popular apps like Skype and Qik.

As an entrepreneur, I was a founding shareholder of eBay, Siebel Systems (sold to Oracle) and Qik (sold to Skype), and am currently vice-chairman of a new start-up, PatientKey Inc.
Meanwhile Qik can make calls between EVO 4Gs, but also stream video live to the web (while the iPhone needs to record and then upload to get "social" using its official apps).
As you can see from the picture above, we were able to get a video call going using Qik over WiFi, although there was quite a lot of delay and in some cases a serious amount of pixelation.
With integrated 3D HD (720p) video capture and 4G speeds, both of these devices will allow gamers to post high-quality video to YouTube or Facebook, or share moments in real time over the Internet live, via Qik.

No mention was made of the FaceTime call resolution, but given the fact that the front camera is merely VGA, it's probably streaming at the same 640 x 480 that Qik is constrained to in the free service.
Named for the product's "utopic vision, " ZionEyez now has a prototype with a more grounded spec list, including a 720p camera and 8GB of memory, along with micro-USB and Bluetooth connectivity for livecasting to Qik or LiveStream -- The Truman Show style.
