Regrettably, the OfficeofStrategicInfluence was taken down within months by unfounded rumors it would disseminate false news stories to promote American objectives.
Still, the front-page, above-the-fold article in the February 19 editions of the New York Times that precipitated the current firestorm of criticism was sourced by unnamed individuals transparently defending their bureaucratic "turf" against proposals that would cede to a newly created OfficeofStrategicInfluence any authority to disseminate information to overseas audiences.
Even though the OfficeofStrategicInfluence has been strangled in its cradle, the function of deceiving our adversaries will live on in one form or another, practiced in one place or another, just as deception has gone on ever since the serpent misled Eve and the Greeks left the Trojans a gift horse.
