And by placing the MRI machine in the neonatal intensive care unit at Evelina Children's Hospital in London they are one of the few centres in the world to have a scanner in such close proximity to the babies who often need it most, Prof Edwards says.

Hundreds of Isle of Man patients requiring an MRI scan will be seen in a mobile unit whilst the Department of Health's current scanner is upgraded.

Other services at the hospital will include a general outpatients, GP services, diagnostics - such as MRI, X-rays and ultrasound, a unit to support elderly people, day treatment unit, ante and post-natal services, children's centre and breast clinic.
