Japan has been on the fringes of the program since at least 1993, when Mitsubishi Heavy, Mitsubishi Electric, Mitsubishi Corp. (the three are independent), NEC, Hitachi and Fujitsu participated in the bilateral Western Pacific Missile Defense Architecture Study.
