Their 160-foot aluminum masts could barely support the loads placed on them, and the sails put thousands of pounds of tension on lines that had to be hauled by hand.

The yacht, named after the eponymous novel and film, was built by Perini Navi, an Italian firm that installed the DynaRig technology that electronically trims the sails in the direction of the wind and can furl them into the masts in just six minutes.
