On Wednesday, demonstrators in Cairo angry at the film - Innocence of Muslims - had breached the walls of the US embassy and torn down the flag.
Egypt's grand mufti questioned whether in the United States, for example, the inflammatory film "Innocence of Muslims" was not illegal under laws prohibiting the spread of hatred.
The elected government, led by Islamic democrats, had trouble formulating a response just as it and neighboring governments have been caught off guard by protests against the film Innocence of Muslims.
By this definition, "Innocence of Muslims" is cut-and-dry blasphemy.

The primary complaint from Republicans is that Rice's remarks were centered on anger over the anti-Islam film, "Innocence of Muslims, " when there was classified intelligence available suggesting a possible al Qaeda link.
The initial response to the Benghazi terror attack by the Obama administration was to blame the violence on the 14 minute "Innocence of Muslims" film trailer that had been posted on Youtube.

The United Muslim Christian Forum, a friendly-sounding "interfaith" group issued a press release on September 18 demanding the prosecution of the makers of the low-quality Innocence of Muslims film that appeared on YouTube.
The footage, a trailer for a longer film entitled Innocence of Muslims (initial title was Desert Warrior), appears to depict Islam as a religion of violence and hate, and its Prophet Muhammad as a foolish and power-hungry man.
That "grotesque film" is "Innocence of Muslims, " a video that sat obscure on the Internet until September 11 when rioters, seizing on it, attacked the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.
In the past year alone, Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam activists rioted in Bangladesh, Muslim protestors temporarily shuttered the U.S. consulate in Calcutta protesting the anti-Islam film "Innocence of Muslims, " and violence erupted between non-Muslims and Muslims in Burma and the Indian state of Assam.
The party line assiduously pushed for days thereafter by administration spokesmen including, most risibly UN Ambassador Susan Rice, was that the attack spontaneously ensued from a demonstration outside the U.S. compound prompted by an American video, "Innocence of Muslims, " which reviles the founder of Islam.
Regardless of the actual history and provenance of the film (and we should not discount the possibility of it being concocted by Salafists as a kind of blasphemous false flag), "Innocence of Muslims" appears to violate a principle absolutely clear to any practicing Muslim who knows the law.
