The general-manager role is partly creative and partly financial (he has to do a great deal of fundraising from the Met's wealthy patrons), and Mr. Gelb has been a particularly public face during his six-year tenure.
The 53-year-old is back with the Indians, where he spent one season as a special assistant under Indians president Mark Shapiro and generalmanager Chris Antonetti after he was fired as Philadelphia's manager.
