Contractors have been replacing catenary wires the overhead electric cables that power trains in various spots along the line since 1991, and in some cases replacing original equipment erected in 1907.
The Edison Electric Institute and some of its coal-based utility members such as American ElectricPower, FirstEnergy Corp. and Southern Company have said that they will fall in line but that they will need more time.
The bottom line is that electricity supplied by the power grid is increasingly incapable of providing the quality of electric service needed to operate an advanced economy.
